High Houses is perfectly located for an enjoyable and relaxing stay in the Lake District National Park and there are some superb walks to be had in the area. All of the hills at the back of Skiddaw and Blencathra are within easy reach and there are many more gentle walks to be had around the local Ireby & Uldale area.

The house itself is completely surrounded by fell and farmland and is in the centre of John Peel Hunting Country. In fact he only lived 2 miles up the road for most of his life. The area still has close hunting connections There is a local story of a fox that used to trick the huntsmen and hounds by hiding behind a chimney on the low roof of High Houses.

Close to the most northern most lake, Bassenthwaite (5 miles), and with the more popular parts of the Lake District, such as Ullswater and Keswick and Derwentwater only 30 minutes or so away. The Central & Southern Lakeland area including Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere are also easily accessible from our location.

High Houses is also ideally situated for touring the Scottish Border Country where the Roman Emperor Hadrian built his famous wall to keep out the marauding Picts and Scots. Much of Hadrian's Wall and the forts can be still seen today. Also border castles and peel towers can be seen in this area.

The city of Carlisle with its excellent market and shops is only 18 miles away, together with its historic Castle, Cathedral and Tullie House Museum, as well as the famous Race Course.

The Eden Valley & North Pennines areas are also within easy reach of High Houses.

The beautiful village of Caldbeck is only 7 miles across the Northern Fells, with it's mining heritage and mills (now long gone). Priest's Mill has been converted into a number of shops and the excellent Watermill Café.

Trotters World of Animals is just down the road - home to hundreds of friendly animals including traditional favorites, endangered species, birds of prey and reptiles. A great deal is under cover so rain need not spoil your visit.

The Lake District Osprey Project is located near Bassenthwaite Lake and the viewpoint at Dodd Wood is just a ten minute drive from High Houses.

There is something to suit everyone when you stay at High Houses, whatever the weather.
